After my divorce, every boyfriend I introduced to my daughters disappeared after meeting them. When another one ran off in the middle of dinner, I investigated. What I discovered about my daughters’ true motives stunned and devastated me.
I thought my life was over after my tumultuous divorce from Roger two years ago. Roger and I were married for 15 years and have two beautiful daughters, Veronica, 14, and Casey, 12. We were happy until things started to fall apart. Roger’s late-night absences, the endless arguments, and the silence that followed ultimately led to our divorce. I was awarded custody of the girls, and Roger has weekend visitation rights.
Two years after our separation, I decided to turn the page and find love again. Not just for myself, but also for my daughters. They deserved a father figure in their lives.
When I recently brought my boyfriend, David, home for dinner and introduced him to my children, I didn’t understand why he ended our relationship after meeting my daughters.
“David, what’s wrong?” I asked when he suddenly stood up from the table, pale as a sheet. He didn’t answer, simply grabbed his coat and left without a word.
Veronica and Casey remained seated in silence, their eyes fixed on their plates.
“What happened, girls?” I asked, my voice trembling. They didn’t answer, and their silence was infuriating.
That evening, I called David several times, but he didn’t answer. The next morning, he sent me a text message saying: “It’s over, Melinda. I can’t marry you. Goodbye!”
I felt like my heart was breaking again. It wasn’t the first time.
Shawn, a guy I’d dated earlier in the year, had done the same thing. Before him, it was Victor. All these men knew about my past and my daughters. So, what was wrong?
I was determined to find out. The next day, I met my colleague and friend José at work and confided in him.
“José, it’s like a habit. Every time a man meets my daughters, he simply disappears,” I explained, feeling tears welling up in my eyes.
“Come on, Melinda, it can’t be that bad,” said José, laughing.
“I’m serious. I need your help,” I insisted.
He agreed to help me. A few weeks later, I invited José to dinner at my house, introducing him as my “new boyfriend.” Veronica and Casey’s smiles vanished instantly.
“José, why don’t you go talk to the girls and get to know them?” I said, leaving them, as usual, at the table. I waited in the kitchen, my heart pounding.
When I returned, José’s face was paler than usual. He was nervously gripping his fork and barely looking at me.
After dinner, he left quickly, and I realized something was wrong. That evening, once the girls were in bed, I called José.
“José, what happened?” I asked, struggling to keep a steady voice.
“Melinda, we need to talk in person,” he said. My heart sank.
The next morning, I hurried to the office and found José before our shift started.
“Tell me,” I demanded. “What happened last night? What did the girls say?”
“Melinda, your daughters… they think you and Roger are going to get back together. They’re deliberately scaring away your boyfriends,” he confessed.
I froze. “What do you mean?”
