The dark drawer

The heavy paper folder weighed heavily in Gabriel’s trembling hands as the morning light filtered through the blinds of the master bedroom. Gabriel Lawson had spent thirty years working as a truck driver, enduring grueling journeys across the country to provide a stable life for his sixteen-year-old son, Lucas.🚛

Since the death of his first wife, Clara, from an illness that had struck years before, Gabriel had done everything he could to keep their modest home in Columbus safe. But since his marriage to Candice two years earlier, subtle changes had been taking place during his long trips delivering goods.✉️

Candice had convinced Gabriel to entrust her with managing the household finances, arguing that her accounting experience would allow them to save money and optimize their budget. She had even persuaded him to take in his teenage nephew, Wyatt, promising that the presence of another boy would provide Lucas with a reassuring companion.🏠

Instead, her return three days earlier from her tour in Phoenix revealed a true nightmare: cruelty, neglect, and psychological abuse inflicted on her vulnerable teenage son. Lucas had been forced to sleep in the freezing laundry room, wash heavy loads of laundry by hand, and suffer from hunger while Candice and her extended family were on vacation in Miami  🏖️.
