On the evening of her birthday, everything changed.
For her 72nd birthday, my mother had prepared a chocolate tart. Richard arrived with roses, a carefully wrapped gift… and his leather satchel under his arm.
Dinner was perfect. He made her laugh out loud with a story about a courgette being mistaken for a cucumber at the gardening club.
Then, at 7:26 p.m., he looked at his watch.
— Excuse me, darling. I have to go.
My mother’s smile faded.
— Can’t you stay for ten minutes? It’s my birthday.
— Really, I can’t.
He took his bag and went out.
Chloé watched him leave through the window. Then, without a word, she grabbed her coat and disappeared in turn.
Forty minutes of silence.
The front door opened abruptly. Chloe was there, her eyes red, Richard’s leather satchel clutched to her.
— Chloe… how did you get that?
She shook her head.
— Don’t ask me how. Look at what he’s hiding in there. And why he always leaves before 7:30 PM.
She placed the bag on the table. My mother looked inside. She put her hand to her mouth.
– My God…
Chloé wiped away her tears and whispered:
— Grandma, that’s not even the worst of it. I saw who he brings that to.
Some truths arrive like gifts we didn’t ask for — but that we can no longer do without.
