She was four years old when Frank came into her life. When her mother left too soon, he stayed. He walked her down the aisle, held her daughter in his arms at her christening, and every Sunday morning, he took out that little star-shaped cookie cutter to make apple pancakes. He was her father. At first, little Rosalie refused to even speak to him. If Frank offered her toast, she would point at the bread. If he wanted to read her a story, she would dive under his covers. Her real father had left before she could remember, and at four years old, she had already learned to distrust men who arrived with suitcases.
Frank never forced anything. He learned that she loved strawberry jam to the very last drop. On stormy nights, he would sit in the hallway outside her room because she wouldn’t let him in. And every Sunday, he made his star-shaped pancakes.
One morning, three months after his marriage to her mother, Rosalie walked into the kitchen and accidentally called him Dad. Frank dropped his spatula. Neither of them said a word. He simply placed the least burnt pancake on his plate.
