The promise made under the kitchen table
The night after the funeral, Rosalie had taken refuge under the kitchen table, knees drawn up to her chest. Frank found her there before dawn. Without asking any questions, he sat down on the floor beside her.
* “Are you leaving?”* she whispered.
He looked hurt, as if those two words had struck him right in the heart.
* “No. “*
* “Everyone is leaving.”*
* “Not me.”*
He held out his little finger to her. She promised. So did he.
And he kept his word — for decades.
