Sometimes, life throws us such intense moments that we don’t know whether to laugh or cry. That’s exactly what this mother experienced, raising her six-year-old daughter Sophie alone after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. When the doctors uttered those unbearable words, she chose to fight back in a different way: by fulfilling her daughter’s dream. But this trip to the seaside would hold far more than she could have imagined.
A dream born from the pages of a book
Sophie had an absolute passion for The Little Mermaid. She could listen to the story over and over, her eyes shining, fascinated by the underwater world that transported her far away from the hospital and the IV drips. It was during a chemotherapy session, her hand clasped in her grandfather’s, that she whispered softly, “Grandpa, I would love to see the ocean one day.”
Those few words had changed everything. Despite the tight finances of a single mother, despite the fatigue and the sorrow, the grandfather had offered to finance the trip. Because some things can’t wait.
