TIPS & Tricks

My boyfriend insisted on a fancy dinner for Valentine’s Day. When the $380 bill arrived, he told me to pay half. I refused. He silently paid the full amount, got up, and left. The waitress came over and whispered, “I can’t keep quiet. Your boyfriend left you a note.” My world crumbled when I read it. (Continued in the first comment.)

Valentine’s Day dinner ended very differently than I had imagined.

In theory, Valentine’s Day should be simple.

A pleasant dinner.

A quiet afternoon.

A moment to feel appreciated and connected.

At least, that’s what I expected when my boyfriend insisted on going to dinner at a fancy and “special” restaurant.

For several days, he had shown unusual enthusiasm about it.

He talked about the restaurant as if it were something important.

“Believe me,” he said, “you will have an unforgettable night.”

I didn’t notice it at the time. I thought he just wanted to do something nice for the occasion.

So I accepted.

I had no idea how the evening would unfold.

A dinner that seemed more substantial than necessary.

The restaurant was one of those elegant places where everything seemed to have been carefully thought out.

Soft lighting.

Relaxing music.

Menus with brief descriptions that give the impression of being expensive.

A place where even water seems to be an integral part of the experience.

My boyfriend seemed proud to be there.

He gives the order confidently.
