It all started in first grade, around a small red box handed out at recess. Christina was hiding hers under a napkin when Noah, her tablemate, whispered, “That’s clever.” He was doing the same thing. “Do you hate them too?” “They’re old grapes,” he replied very seriously. The friendship was sealed before the morning was even over.
Noah had Down syndrome. But at six years old, what mattered to Christina was that he cheated on dinosaur quizzes and laughed at his terrible drawings. One day, a cruel classmate told her that no one would ever love her. Christina fired back. And that’s how a prom promise was born, little finger to little finger.
