What the letter really revealed
Inside the envelope: a USB key and a folded note. Mark wrote that she should not look at the contents out of sadness, but only if someone was trying to make her doubt him… or herself.
A few days later, Sally’s stepmother, Violet, began questioning the decision to donate her organs. Then she insinuated that Mark might not have been thinking clearly. The tension escalated at the memorial, in front of everyone.
That evening, Sally finally plugged in the USB drive. Mark appeared on the screen, thinner but lucid. He had planned everything. He knew his mother would react this way. He had wanted to protect Sally from this storm by leaving her irrefutable proof: the decision came from him, freely, with love.
